Nano Ceramic Window Tint: What the Heat Numbers Really Mean
Nano ceramic window tint blocks heat without a very dark look. Here is how to read the heat, visibility and signal claims before you choose film for your car or home in Fresno.
Nano ceramic window tint is a non-metallic film made with tiny ceramic particles. Its main advantage is heat rejection without making the glass heavily tinted. For a Fresno driver, the useful comparison is total solar energy rejected at the shade you want, not the largest infrared percentage on the box.
At Cali Phat Customz, owner Charlie Velasquez brings over 30 years of window tinting experience and personally installs film on vehicles and buildings. We serve Fresno and the Central San Joaquin Valley. Choosing ceramic starts with what you need from the glass: less heat, for example, rather than simply a darker appearance.
Does a 99% infrared rating mean the film blocks 99% of the heat?
No. An infrared rating can describe performance at just one wavelength under test conditions. It does not measure all the solar energy passing through the glass. A high infrared percentage alone cannot tell you how much heat a film keeps out.
One manufacturer’s published spec table, retrieved November 1, 2026, shows the difference. Its nano ceramic line lists 82% infrared rejection at 950 nanometers across every shade. Total solar energy rejected rises from 48% at 70% visible light transmission to 66% at 5%. The infrared rating stays the same while overall solar rejection changes.
For heat control, ask for total solar energy rejected, usually shortened to TSER, at the exact shade you are buying. Without that figure, you cannot judge the ceramic premium from the infrared claim alone.
Is near-99% UV blocking what you pay the ceramic premium for?
Usually not. Near-99% UV rejection is a standard feature of quality window film, including non-ceramic products. Check the specific product’s UVA and UVB specifications, but do not treat UV protection alone as a reason to pay more for ceramic.
The stronger reason to consider ceramic is heat control at a lighter shade. If UV protection is your main concern, compare suitable non-ceramic films and check each one’s UVA and UVB figures before deciding.
Does nano ceramic film block cell phone or GPS signal?
Non-metallic ceramic film is generally less likely to interfere with phone or GPS signals than metalized film. That benefit comes from its construction, not from the word “nano” on the label.
On one manufacturer’s product page, retrieved November 1, 2026, the company says its nano ceramic film does not block cellphone or other electronic signals. That is a claim about its own product, not an independent test. Ask for the exact film name and confirm its construction before relying on a signal-friendly claim.
Does the word ceramic on a film mean it cuts more heat?
No. Ceramic describes the film’s construction, not a fixed level of heat rejection. Products carrying the same label can perform differently.
A lighter ceramic film can reduce solar heat without the visibility trade-off of a very dark shade. To judge that benefit, read these two figures together.
Total solar energy rejected (TSER)
TSER measures the overall share of solar energy rejected by the glazing system. Compare products at similar visible light transmission and under comparable test conditions. A darker shade will often have a higher TSER, so comparing a dark film with a light one can give a misleading impression of the difference between products.
Visible light transmission (VLT)
VLT is the percentage of visible light that passes through. Lower numbers mean darker glass. For driving, choose a shade that preserves visibility after dark, especially during shorter winter days and the Valley’s cool-season fog.
California’s automotive tint rules differ by window position. Confirm current official requirements for the front side windows, windshield and rear glass before installation rather than assuming one limit applies to the whole vehicle.
Is the installer worth as much as the film?
Often, yes. Dust trapped under film and poor application can leave visible defects or cause edges to peel. A strong specification sheet cannot make up for poor workmanship.
Cool weather also slows curing. In late fall and winter, film may need more time to set before you roll the windows down. Follow the installer’s instructions rather than using a waiting period you remember from a summer installation.
Charlie personally handles installations at Cali Phat Customz. His experience and personal attention are part of the service, alongside the film itself. When comparing quotes, consider who will do the work as well as which product will go on the glass.
What should a tint warranty cover before you pay for ceramic?
Warranty coverage varies by product and installer. Get the terms in writing before booking, then check what happens if the film fails.
- Covered defects: Look for specific coverage for problems such as color change or peeling. Check whether workmanship is included.
- Labor: Find out whether removal and replacement labor are covered, not just replacement film.
- Length of coverage: Confirm when coverage starts and when it ends.
- After a move or sale: Check where you can make a claim and whether coverage transfers to a new owner.
- Exclusions: Read the care requirements, including restrictions on cleaning products and rolling windows down during curing.
A long warranty term is less useful if it excludes the cost of correcting the problem. Read the coverage, not just the headline.
When is ceramic film not the best buy?
Ceramic is worth considering when direct sun through the glass is the main source of discomfort. Fresno’s hot, dry summers make that case for many drivers, though late fall and winter are the right time to compare films and plan the install. A west-facing room or a car parked in full sun is a stronger candidate than a shaded vehicle used mainly for short trips.
If privacy or glare control is your main goal, another film construction may meet that need for less. Compare its specifications before paying extra. Darkness and heat rejection are not interchangeable.

Frequently asked questions
How long does nano ceramic tint last?
There is no single lifespan that applies to every nano ceramic film. Product quality, installation and care affect how it holds up. Ask for the specific film’s written warranty, but remember that a warranty term is not a promise of an exact service life.
What is better, carbon ceramic or nano ceramic tint?
The label alone does not establish which film performs better. Compare TSER at a similar VLT, then check the warranty and installation quality. Our ceramic vs carbon guide explains how the two constructions differ. If one product’s heat rejection is measured differently, ask for comparable specifications before choosing.
How much does it cost to nano tint a car?
The price depends on the selected film, the vehicle’s glass and whether existing tint needs removal. Ask for a written estimate that identifies the product and the windows included. Cali Phat Customz does not publish a fixed ceramic tint price on its website.
Who makes the best nano ceramic tint?
No single brand is the right choice for every vehicle. Look for published TSER and VLT figures for the exact shade, plus clear warranty terms. A large infrared percentage without its test conditions is not enough to rank one film above another.
Is ceramic window tint worth the extra cost?
Ceramic can be worth the extra cost when solar heat is your main complaint and you want to keep the glass relatively light. Compare TSER at the shade you can safely and legally use. If you mainly want privacy or glare reduction, a suitable non-ceramic film may meet your needs for less.
